The Road Between Fear and Peace

Dennis J. Ackman ·

A man came to a place where two roads met.

He had heard the words, “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,” and they troubled him. Did God want him terrified? Or was God warning him not to treat salvation casually?

So he stopped. He opened the Word, got honest with Jesus, and refused to keep walking until he understood what he could.

He discovered that “work out” did not mean earning what Jesus had already paid for. It meant taking the gospel seriously enough to let it work its way into his life.

And “fear and trembling” did not mean living like a slave waiting to be punished. It meant standing before a holy God with humility, honesty, and surrender.

The more clearly he understood the gospel, the less he had to pretend. He realized he did not have to save himself. Jesus had already done what he could never do.

He still had questions, but the panic began to leave. Peace came—not because he understood everything, but because he trusted the One who did.

That is the peace that surpasses understanding.

Sometimes fear and trembling are what make us stop running, seek the truth, and take the gospel seriously. And when the gospel moves from something we have heard to Someone we trust, fear no longer gets the final word.

Jesus does.

Are you willing to stop pretending, seek the truth, and let surrender lead you to the peace only Christ can give?

Philippians 2:12–13

Philippians 4:6–7 (WEB): “The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.”
